UK medical insurer Bupa opens Nairobi office in expansion push
Bupa is known for international private medical insurance (IPMI), offering individuals and families living or traveling abroad access to healthcare in multiple countries.
British private medical insurer Bupa Global has opened its first Africa office in Nairobi as it eyes expansion of its services in the continent.
The establishment of the Nairobi office comes after clearance from the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) for the insurer to operate in the Kenyan market.
Bupa is known for international private medical insurance (IPMI) which allows individuals and families living or travelling outside their home countries to access healthcare across multiple countries.
The firm says it identified Kenya as a key growth market in its global IPMI strategy, citing the country’s continuous economic growth and the projection that the health insurance market in the country will remain on a growth trajectory.
“Kenya is a crucial market for us and a gateway to the incredible opportunities we see across Africa. With a local office and continued investments in digital capabilities, we’re creating an ecosystem that makes world-class healthcare more accessible across the region,” said Anthony Cabrelli, MD at Bupa Global.
The office will offer a range of international health insurance plans designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, individuals, expatriates, and corporates. Customers will also benefit from direct access to top specialists and a global network of healthcare providers.
“We can offer care that really meets people’s needs,” said Mr Jayaratne.
In 2023, Bupa committed nearly £55 million (Sh9.16 billion) over five years to enhance its digital capabilities.
Bupa says expanding access to digital healthcare will be key to meeting the growing demand for critical services across Africa, enabling greater convenience and affordability for customers.
Under Bupa’s premium international coverage, the firm offers private rooms in world-class hospitals, a specialist without a doctor's referral, and access to a doctor anytime. The cover also allows for global evacuation for healthcare emergencies.
