Christians have commemorated the period of Easter in various ways, including re-enacting the journey to the cross, His crucifixion and eventually, resurrection.

Globally, the 1971 show Jesus Christ Superstar, scripted by Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice remains one of the most popular scripts performed.

Growing up in Kenya in the 80s and 90s, the Jesus film, aired on the national broadcaster over days signalled the start of the Easter period.

Then came Mel Gibson’s resounding success, The Passion of the Christ, which covers the 12 hours leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion, the passion hours.

The movie, received to both acclaim and criticism, remains one of the highest viewed Christian films and is used as a powerful tool of evangelism for believers.

Over the years, creatives in the local church and theatrical space have found creative ways of sharing the story of Christ’s death and resurrection. This year is no different. Here are some of the places you can catch the Easter story this weekend.

The play is an adaptation that imagines what could have happened to Jesus between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.

The script focuses on the real conquest between Satan and his principalities and Christ, who is now ‘unfamiliar territory’, the last frontier.

The play looks at Jesus’ main purpose of death for us.

Notable names in this production are Samson Omondi, Benson Ochungo, Charity Nyambura, Michael Mwangi, Eunice Kangai and Karimi Rimbui, among others, and will be showing on Sunday 20 at the 9am and 11.30 am services.
