How many electric cars are now coming onto the roads each year? Erasmus
In 2024, the production figure was 17,000,000, of which about 65 per cent were Chinese. That’s already about six times Kenya’s total vehicle population, but even at that rate, it would take about 70 years to replace the existing global fleet of vehicles powered by fossil fuels. Production levels might, of course, increase...perhaps exponentially.
China has taken an emphatic lead by investing more in state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) production capacity, further refining production efficiencies, and delivering a comparable quality at significantly lower cost.Â
Bear in mind that several established motor vehicle manufacturers around the world now have substantial Chinese ownership. India also has investments in a number of major international brands.Â
You will be aware that these are the two most heavily populated countries on the planet. Each has a population greater than the whole of Western Europe, and at least three times higher than North America. Big numbers don’t daunt them.
